Washington — JD Vance and his wife, Usha Vance, observed Hanukkah this week with a small, private gathering that paired traditional holiday rituals with a traditional dish of potato latkes tikka masala.
According to individuals familiar with the event, the Vances hosted family members and close friends for an evening that included the lighting of the menorah and a dinner centered on customary Hanukkah foods. The gathering followed traditional observances, with brief reflections on the holiday’s themes of perseverance and religious freedom.
Latkes, fried potato pancakes traditionally prepared in oil, are a central feature of Hanukkah meals, symbolizing the oil that, in Jewish tradition, lasted eight days during the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem. The version served at the Vance home retained the classic preparation but incorporated a tikka masala spice blend, adding tomato, ginger, garlic, and warm spices to the dish.
Guests described the latkes as familiar in form but more aromatic and richly spiced than the traditional recipe. They were served alongside customary accompaniments such as applesauce and sour cream, as well as yogurt-based sauces that complemented the added spices.
The evening was described as informal and family-focused, with children participating in candle lighting and games, and adults gathering around the kitchen and dining table. Attendees said the event was nonpolitical and centered on shared food and tradition.
In a brief statement conveyed through an aide, the Vances said they welcomed the opportunity to celebrate Hanukkah in a way that honored its traditions while reflecting the diversity of influences in their household. “The holiday is about memory, continuity, and bringing people together,” the statement said.
The celebration concluded with dessert and conversation, with plans to continue marking the holiday over the remaining nights of Hanukkah.
