Seattle — A powerful bomb cyclone that swept through the Pacific Northwest on Wednesday left a trail of destruction and, in an unexpected twist, caused a major outage for Reddit users worldwide. The storm, which intensified rapidly, brought hurricane-force winds, heavy rain, and snow to the region, and left Reddit offline for several hours, leaving millions of users in the dark.
The bomb cyclone, characterized by a rapid drop in pressure of at least 24 millibars in 24 hours, struck the Pacific Northwest Wednesday morning, pummeling Washington, Oregon, and parts of California with severe weather conditions. The storm knocked out power, disrupted transportation, and triggered flash flooding and mudslides in several areas. While the region was already bracing for the worst, it was the tech world that felt the ripple effects—specifically Reddit, whose services went down by mid-afternoon.
Reddit, one of the world’s most visited websites, quickly became the focus of online chatter as users noticed they could not access their favorite subreddits. The outage lasted for several hours, and initial reports pointed to a power disruption at one of Reddit's key data centers located in the affected region. The combination of high winds and widespread power surges caused damage to the servers that power the platform, causing it to go offline unexpectedly.
“We are aware of an outage affecting Reddit users worldwide,” said Reddit's Chief Technology Officer, Eric Stangel, in a brief statement. “This issue has been caused by significant weather-related disruptions at one of our primary data centers in the Pacific Northwest. Our team is working quickly to restore service and we apologize for any inconvenience.”
As the outage extended into the evening, frustrated Reddit users took to Twitter and other platforms to vent their frustrations, with many noting the sudden absence of their daily fix of memes, discussions, and trending posts. "I guess the storm really blew Reddit offline," one user joked, while others shared images of the storm’s devastation, calling it a "double whammy."
In addition to Reddit’s downtime, the storm wreaked havoc on the region, knocking out power to hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses. Wind speeds reached upwards of 80 mph in some areas, while flooding and mudslides shut down key highways, forcing the closure of schools and government offices. Seattle’s iconic Space Needle was temporarily closed as a precaution due to high winds, and multiple counties in Oregon declared states of emergency.
“While we’re working hard to restore power and clear the roads, the storm’s intensity is making it difficult to keep up with all the damage,” said Washington Governor Jay Inslee. “This is one of the strongest storms we’ve faced in recent memory, and it will take time to recover.”
As for Reddit, after a few tense hours, service began to return to normal late Wednesday evening. Engineers worked to stabilize the system, and by Thursday morning, the site was mostly operational again, though some users reported slower load times in certain regions. Despite the recovery, the outage highlighted the vulnerabilities of online platforms, particularly those reliant on centralized infrastructure in regions prone to extreme weather.
