Fort Lauderdale, FL — A Spirit Airlines flight en route from Fort Lauderdale to Tuscaloosa was diverted to Atlanta after the plane was struck by bullets while attempting to land. The Boeing 319, carrying 157 passengers and six crew members, was approaching its destination when the crew reported damage to the aircraft caused by gunfire, prompting an emergency diversion to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
The flight, Spirit Airlines Flight 1410, was just minutes from landing at Tuscaloosa National Airport when the pilot declared an emergency due to “unexplained damage” to the fuselage. Authorities later confirmed that the plane had been struck by multiple bullets during its descent.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the passengers or crew, and the plane landed safely in Atlanta at approximately 7:45 p.m., well after the bullets were fired. Passengers were quickly evacuated and bused to the terminal, where they were offered alternate flights to Tuscaloosa, which is about 50 miles from Birmingham, Alabama.
"While our passengers and crew are safe, this is an extremely disturbing incident," said Spirit Airlines in a statement. "We are fully cooperating with local law enforcement and federal authorities as they investigate what led to this situation. Our primary concern right now is the safety and well-being of our passengers and crew."
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), along with the FBI and local law enforcement, are working together to determine the source of the gunfire. Preliminary investigations suggest that the bullets were likely fired from the ground, though the exact location and identity of the shooter remain unknown.
“We are taking this case very seriously,” said Special Agent Maria Mendoza of the FBI’s Atlanta field office. “Firing at an aircraft is not only a criminal act, but it poses a serious threat to public safety. We are following all leads to track down the individual responsible for this dangerous and reckless behavior.”
The shooting occurred as Flight 1410 was descending toward its landing approach to Tuscaloosa National Airport, an airport typically used for smaller, regional flights. At some point during the descent, the crew reported hearing a loud noise and observed visible damage to the aircraft’s fuselage. Upon closer inspection, it was determined that the plane had been hit by multiple bullets.
Air traffic controllers immediately cleared the aircraft for a safe landing in Atlanta, where the plane was met by emergency crews and inspected by authorities. No immediate danger was found once the plane was on the ground, though a more thorough inspection will continue as part of the investigation.
Security experts have expressed alarm over the incident. “This is an incredibly serious breach of safety protocols,” said aviation safety analyst Jack Caldwell. “A bullet striking a plane, especially during landing, is a worst-case scenario. This highlights the importance of heightened security measures in both the air and on the ground.”
Spirit Airlines confirmed that all passengers were accommodated in Atlanta and rebooked on subsequent flights to Tuscaloosa. The airline also pledged to support the investigation and provide updates as more details emerge.
The FBI has asked for the public's assistance in the investigation, urging anyone who may have seen anything suspicious around the time of the incident to come forward. “We are committed to finding those responsible for this act of violence and bringing them to justice,” Agent Mendoza added.
The shooting has raised serious concerns about safety near airports and flight paths, especially in more rural areas where monitoring of air traffic may be less stringent. Experts are calling for greater scrutiny of airspace security, particularly as aircraft descend to land.
For now, Spirit Airlines passengers are left to process the close call, while law enforcement continues to search for answers and a possible suspect in this shocking and highly unusual incident.
