McConnell, Cruz Face Criticism After Cancun Sightings During 9/11 Anniversary

WASHINGTON — A political controversy erupted Friday after photographs purportedly showing Senators Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Ted Cruz of Texas vacationing together in Cancún circulated widely on social media, prompting sharp criticism from Democrats over the senators' absence from prominent 25th-anniversary commemorations of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The images, which were posted online by a tourist and quickly spread across social media, appeared to show the two Republican senators at a resort in the Mexican Caribbean. 

Democratic lawmakers and political activists seized on the images, arguing that the senators' apparent presence abroad was inappropriate on a day when ceremonies were being held at the World Trade Center site in New York, the Pentagon outside Washington and elsewhere around the country.

“This is a day when Americans come together to remember nearly 3,000 people who were killed and the first responders who made the ultimate sacrifice,” Bernie Sanders said in a statement. “The American people deserve to know why two sitting senators chose to be elsewhere.”

The criticism intensified online, with Democratic accounts posting photographs of the alleged vacation alongside images from memorial ceremonies. Some accused McConnell and Cruz of being out of touch, while others questioned whether elected officials should be expected to attend major anniversary ceremonies in person.

The episode comes as the United States observes the 25th anniversary of the attacks, with ceremonies across the country featuring readings of victims' names, moments of silence and tributes to survivors and first responders.

Cruz, who has been a prominent Republican voice in national politics, has also been active in events surrounding the anniversary and the upcoming midterm elections. McConnell, a veteran senator and former Republican leader, has likewise spoken publicly about the attacks and their aftermath.

Neither senator's office immediately provided an explanation for the alleged trip. Republicans, meanwhile, accused Democrats of turning a solemn anniversary into a partisan dispute.

The controversy also revived memories of Cruz's 2021 trip to Cancún during a severe winter crisis in Texas, an episode that generated widespread criticism and ultimately led the senator to return home.
