WASHINGTON — The Social Security Administration said Tuesday it will issue commemorative Social Security cards to newborns born in the United States during America’s 250th birthday celebration, creating a limited-edition federal document to mark the semiquincentennial.
The cards, which will function the same as standard Social Security cards, will feature the Freedom 250 logo and be issued to babies born from July 2 through Dec. 31, 2026, the agency said. Parents will not need to apply separately for the design, as the cards will be distributed through the Enumeration at Birth program.
The commemorative cards will only be issued to newborns whose grandparents were also born in the United States, adding a family-lineage requirement to the eligibility rules.
Officials said the cards will be produced at no extra cost to families or taxpayers. Replacement cards issued later will not carry the commemorative marking.
