PHILADELPHIA — Organizers of the Freedom 250 celebration announced Thursday that rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z will serve as the headline performer for the nationally televised event commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The announcement comes after several previously scheduled musical acts withdrew from the program in recent weeks because of touring commitments, scheduling conflicts, and other professional obligations, according to event officials.
Organizers said the vacant performance slots will be filled by AI-generated versions of the departing artists. The digital performances, developed with the participation of rights holders and production partners, are intended to recreate the performers' stage presence and musical catalogs without requiring the artists to attend in person.
Freedom 250 Executive Director Maria Bennett said the technology would allow organizers to maintain the scale of the event despite last-minute lineup changes.
“Our goal is to deliver a celebration that reflects both American history and contemporary innovation,” Bennett said during a press conference. “The use of AI-generated performances enables us to honor commitments to audiences while exploring emerging forms of entertainment.”
Representatives for several artists who withdrew from the event declined to comment on the decision. Organizers did not immediately release details about which performers would be represented through AI-generated appearances.
Jay-Z is expected to close the evening with a career-spanning set before an audience projected to exceed 100,000 attendees. Event planners said the performance will include live musicians, visual installations, and tributes to key moments in American cultural history.
Federal and local officials involved with Freedom 250 emphasized that all featured performances would be clearly identified as either live or AI-generated during the broadcast.
The Freedom 250 celebration is scheduled to take place on Independence Day weekend and is expected to feature musical performances, historical exhibits, fireworks, and civic ceremonies marking the nation's semiquincentennial.
