Hyundai Recalls Elantra Hybrid Vehicles Following Fire Near Wall Street Landmark

New York - Hyundai Motor America announced a recall of more than 54,000 Elantra Hybrid vehicles in the United States after identifying a potential fire risk linked to a component in the hybrid system. The recall follows a high-profile incident in lower Manhattan in which a parked Elantra Hybrid caught fire near the Charging Bull statue, a widely recognized symbol of Wall Street.

According to officials, the incident occurred earlier this week when the vehicle, which had been parked along Broadway near Bowling Green, suddenly ignited. Witnesses reported seeing smoke emerge from the front of the car before flames quickly spread. Emergency responders contained the fire before it could cause damage to nearby structures or the bronze statue, which remained unharmed.

Preliminary findings suggest the fire may be related to a defect in the vehicle’s power electronics or battery-related components, though Hyundai stated that the investigation is ongoing. Out of an abundance of caution, the company initiated a voluntary recall affecting certain 2021 through 2023 Elantra Hybrid models.

In a statement, Hyundai advised owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from structures until repairs can be completed. The company also said it is working with federal safety regulators, including the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), to determine the root cause and implement a fix.

“No injuries have been reported in connection with this issue,” Hyundai said, adding that dealerships will inspect affected vehicles and replace faulty components at no cost to owners once a remedy is finalized.

The incident drew attention due to its proximity to the Charging Bull, a frequent gathering spot for tourists and financial district visitors. Authorities briefly restricted access to the area while firefighters responded, but normal activity resumed later in the day.

Vehicle recalls related to fire risks have become an increasing concern across the automotive industry, particularly as manufacturers expand hybrid and electric vehicle offerings. Safety regulators have emphasized the importance of early detection and prompt recalls to prevent potential hazards.

Hyundai said it will notify affected owners directly and urged customers to check their vehicle identification number (VIN) on the company’s website or through NHTSA databases to confirm whether their car is included in the recall.
