Miami - Former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani is in critical condition at a Miami hospital after contracting hantavirus during a recent cruise in the Caribbean, according to people familiar with the situation. His office has not released an official statement, but individuals close to the family confirmed that he was admitted late Sunday after experiencing severe respiratory symptoms.
Hantavirus infections are extremely uncommon in the United States and are typically associated with exposure to rodent droppings in rural areas. Health officials said it is unusual—but not impossible—for cases to emerge in other environments. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has not commented on the specifics of Giuliani’s case but noted that investigations into isolated infections can take time.
Passengers on the cruise reported that the ship made several stops at smaller ports where local authorities later identified rodent infestations near popular tourist areas. Cruise line representatives said they are cooperating with public health agencies and have begun internal reviews of sanitation protocols.
Giuliani, 82, had been scheduled to appear at several public events later this month. Those engagements have been postponed indefinitely. A spokesperson for the hospital said only that he is receiving “comprehensive medical care” and that updates will be provided when appropriate.
Epidemiologists emphasized that the risk to the general public remains low. “Hantavirus does not spread from person to person in the United States,” one infectious disease specialist said, adding that cases linked to travel are rare but not unprecedented.
Family members have asked for privacy as Giuliani undergoes treatment. No timeline has been given for his recovery.
